Metal Roofing Advantages for Central Oregon

Metal roofing offers several advantages, making it a popular choice for residential and commercial buildings. Northwest Quality Roofing actually manufacturers the metal panels right on site. We have our own standing Seam metal-roofing-rollformer machine. This makes our metal installs much more efficient. We can run panels to exact sizes with no constriction on length. We also manufacture all of our own custom flashings in-house with our computerized brake.

Ten Advantages of Metal Roofing for homes in Bend and Central Oregon:

1. Durability: Metal roofs are known for their longevity and durability. They can withstand harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, hail, and high winds. Metal roofing materials are resistant to cracking, warping, and other common issues associated with traditional roofing materials. A perfect material for Central Oregon.

2. Longevity: Metal roofs have a longer lifespan compared to many other roofing materials. With proper maintenance, a metal roof can last 50 years or more, which may make having to replace your roof unnecessary.

3. Energy Efficiency: Metal roofs are reflective and often coated with reflective pigments, helping to reflect the sun’s rays and reduce heat absorption. This can result in lower energy bills by keeping the building cooler in hot weather. Metal roofing may help to reduce your summer energy bills.

4. Lightweight: Metal roofing materials are typically lightweight compared to other roofing materials like concrete tiles or slate. This can reduce the overall load on the structure and may eliminate the need for additional structural support.

5. Resistant to Fire: Metal is non-combustible, making metal roofs resistant to fire. This can be a crucial advantage in areas prone to wildfires. This may be a critical advantage for homes in Central Oregon.

6. Low Maintenance: Metal roofs require minimal maintenance compared to other roofing materials. They are less susceptible to issues such as rotting, mold, and insect damage.

7. Recyclability: Metal roofing materials are often made from recycled metal, and they are fully recyclable at the end of their lifespan. This makes metal roofing an environmentally friendly option.

8. Aesthetic Variety: Metal roofs come in a variety of styles, colors, and finishes, providing homeowners and builders with design flexibility to match the architectural style of the building.

9. Weather Resistance: Metal roofing is highly resistant to weather elements, including snow, ice, and heavy rain. This resistance helps prevent water leakage and damage to the structure. You need not worry about winter ice dams with a metal roof.

10. Increased Property Value: The durability, longevity, and energy efficiency of metal roofing can contribute to an increase in the overall property value.

While metal roofing has numerous advantages, it’s essential to consider factors such as upfront cost, installation complexity, and regional climate conditions when deciding on the best roofing material for a specific project.

AN ELEVATED APPROACH FOR NORTHWEST QUALITY ROOFING OF BEND

Published July 14, 2022

Written by Bend Home + Design Staff

Jake Woodruff knows that roofing may not be the sexiest subject out there, and that a new roof doesn’t usually top a person’s list of “cool” large purchases. Regardless, having a quality-built roof overhead is incredibly important for everyone, from first-time homebuyers, to business owners to lifelong Central Oregonians keeping up with important maintenance on their family homes. That importance of a quality roof is why if given the chance to do it all again, Woodruff would follow his same life path to becoming the owner of a premier Central Oregon roofing company, Northwest Quality Roofing. “If I had known what I know now, I don’t think I would have done anything differently,” Woodruff said.

BUILDING A TEAM

Woodruff joined the roofing industry at age 19, shortly after moving to Bend. He started working for a roofing company, and continued on in the business, honing his skills before moving onto the business side of the industry. He and his wife, Gretchen, started Northwest Quality Roofing in 2009, with a vision for the company that’s built right into the name—quality. “We don’t cut corners,” Woodruff said. “If it takes a whole day longer to do a project, then that’s what we’ll do.” Prioritizing quality is something Woodruff has instilled in his team of about twenty-seven employees, most of whom work in the field as foremen and crew leaders, roofing technicians and roofing apprentices. Woodruff acknowledges that roofing is a demanding job, often involving tiring days in the sun working on installations. He believes it’s the company’s strong values and great benefits that help Northwest Quality Roofing attract and retain quality employees. “We offer more than just a job, it’s really a career,” Woodruff said. ‘We’re fortunate to have an awesome core crew of people who have been with us a long time.”

This June, the company was focused on hiring to fill out its team for the busy summer season. Already on the team is Woodrfuff’s son Zackery, who is on staff as a roofing apprentice. Like his father, Zackery, 21, is starting first to master the manual labor side of the business, learning the ins and outs of materials and installation.

ROOFS FOR ALL

Northwest Quality Roofing works primarily with residential homeowners, though the company also does new installations and reroofing of commercial buildings. While most customers are looking for traditional asphalt roofing, the company also offers metal roofing, which tends to be more durable and offer a sleeker look, but for a higher price tag. For metal roofing, the company has machinery to cut and seam sheet metal that can be used on-site at projects, helping to lower costs and speed up installation time, Woodruff said. In addition to roofing, the machines can also be used for custom sheet metal features like chimney caps, custom parapet caps and other custom architectural elements. Choosing between roof styles, and knowing when it’s time to replace a roof is something the Northwest Quality Roofing team helps homeowners with regularly.

GIVING BACK

As a way to give back to the community, Northwest Quality Roofing in 2016 began a contest to give a new roof away to a deserving homeowner in Central Oregon. Each year, the company partners with other community sponsors to gather the materials needed to offer a new roof, and then donates the installation, for a prize valued at $10,000 to $15,000 Residents can nominate themselves or another homeowner each spring in the “Raise the Roof” contest, and then employees select from some of the most deserving candidates to choose a winner. “It’s probably one of the best things we’ve done within this company,” Woodruff said. In early June, Woodruff said a handful of entries had already rolled in for the annual contest, with a winner to be chosen by mid-June. Woodruff said that replacing a roof can be a big-ticket purchase for a homeowner, and not always one they can afford. Being able to provide a roof for free can really be a valuable gift for someone, Woodruff said. “Central Oregon has been super good to myself and my employees and my family as we’ve grown our company,” Woodruff said. “For us to give back like we have, at the end of the day, it’s really the thing that keeps us going.”

The Look of Authentic Wood – But Low Maintenance and Fire Resistant

Cedar wood roof shingles are a distinctly Northwest style that look beautiful on many homes in Oregon. They create a distinctive natural look and unique style. The downside is that wood roof shingles require maintenance and are not fire resistant.

Northwest Quality Roofing has a solution! CeDUR synthetic roof shakes are made from a state-of-the-art Polyurethane manufacturing process which allows them to mold each shingle from natural wood giving them an incredible natural wood look. Products come in a variety of colors to ensure complimentary look to your existing style and color design.

CeDUR shakes offer the same aesthetic appeal of hand split cedar shake. The shakes are molded from real cedar, meaning our grain patterns, shadow lines, and texture are true to life. Natural movement is designed into the CeDUR product to give the roof the natural cedar shake appearance. CeDUR shakes may be installed in a straight course or staggered course. The shake shingles are available in three widths which adds authentic wood beauty and amazing curb appeal to your home.

Some of the features and advantages of CeDUR Roofing Shingles include:

  • Beautiful deep grain wood patterns
  • Rich natural wood appearance with thick shadow lines and grooves
  • No mold or mildew growth
  • No plastic sheen or un-natural appearance
  • No fire risk, splitting, rotting or decay
  • No water absorption

Solid Product with Color Through Pigmentation

CeDUR is not a hollow or cavity back roofing product, meaning each individual roof shake is solid.  CeDUR Color Through Pigmentation means you can cut right through the product with a utility knife. This helps ensure superior installation at the roof’s hips, valleys, ridges, and eaves.  Solid product composition also means better insulation for your home. CeDUR is an energy efficient roofing material with an R-Value in excess of 2.0.  Your home will warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Spring Roof Maintenance

Here is some useful information about inspecting your roof in the Spring. After a long cold winter it is a good idea to inspect your roof. You roof is an investment in your home and its condition is vital!

Hail Damage Inspection Marking

1. Schedule an Inspection. Northwest Quality Roofing will perform a roof inspection to give you the piece of mind that all is OK or determine if there are roof problems that can be corrected. Your roof protects your home so its worth the time to have it inspected for any damage.

2. Mold or Algea. Since moisture can collect on your roof throughout the winter, it is pretty common to find some mold or algae growth. While you are inspecting your shingles, be on the lookout for these issues. There are DIY treatment options for mold removal on your roof, but talk to us at Northwest Quality Roofing before you start pouring any chemicals or taking any severe action.

3. Shingle Inspection. Check for any shingles that are missing, curling, or worn down. If you aren’t comfortable getting up on your roof, you can do a partial visual inspection from the ground or contact us for an inspection. Also look for loose nails or shingles with cracks . If you notice large areas of damaged shingles, it may be time for a roof repair or replacement this spring.

4. Clean your Gutters. During the winter months your gutters and downspouts can accumulate leaves, dirt and pine needles. Keeping you gutters clean will allow rainwater to flow off your roof and drain down away from your foundation. If you experienced any ice dams during the winter you will also want to inspect the gutters for any damage.

What to look for in a Roofing Contractor

You’re going to live and work under a roof for years to come, so choosing a quality roofing contractor is very important. Northwest Quality Roofing has prepared this short article to help you understand what to look for in a roofing contractor, so you’re covered for the duration.

Use this checklist to determine the reliability of a roofing contractor:

  • Are they licensed and can they be bonded?
  • Do they have liability insurance and carry workers compensation insurance?
  • How are potential worker injuries handled? Make sure you won’t be liable for any accidents.
  • If their equipment damages your property, who is responsible?
  • Will their work meet Code, Covenant, or Restriction requirements of your area, if applicable?
  • Will the contractor give you a signed permit and walk-through checklist from the final building inspection, if required?
  • What is the exact business location? Get the address, even if they work out of their home.
  • Has the company changed its business name? If yes, why?
  • Does the owner perform the work, or does he have employees? Request the name of the project supervisor.
  • Will there be subcontractors? Make sure to get their names, license number and insurance certificates.
  • Verify whether there will be workers on the job every day until completed.
  • Do they have a procedure in case of bad weather during the project?
  • Get at least 10 references (addresses and phone numbers) of past jobs you can call and visit.
  • Do they have a warranty on installation and workmanship? How long will you be covered?
  • What is the amount of down payment required?
  • Do they take credit cards? It is much easier to dispute charges if you pay with credit card, should you run into immediate problems.
  • Does the contractor provide product literature and samples prior to the project?
  • Is the contractor’s bid significantly lower than others? Be careful—quality may be an issue.
  • Does the contract specify materials and brands to be used? Make sure it does and make sure these products carry warranties.
  • Make sure cleanup is included in the bid, including gutters and ground areas.
  • Make sure there is a solid arbitration statement in your contract. The roofer must agree to settle disputes through binding arbitration. Without such an agreement, you have no recourse.

Once work begins on your project, pay close attention to the quality and details of the work. Make sure that the contractor is using the materials agreed upon—for example if the contract calls for 30-pound felt, check the labels on the product to verify. Make sure you are getting what you are paying from, from chimney flashing, to vents and pipe jacks.

Prepare your roof for Oregon Winters

Clearin gutters

Fall is the time to prepare your roof for the winter season. Basic roof maintenance is easy and taking the proper steps will enhance your roof and help to extend its life. Between now and the first snow or freeze is the time to prepare your roof for the coming winter season

Clean The Gutters

Leaves and debris collect in your gutter system during the fall season and they can create a clog in the downspouts. Rain water can overflow the gutters, damaging your roof, trim and siding. In addition, the added weight of the leaves, debris and water can also cause your gutters to pull loose from the anchor point.

To prevent these problems and unforeseen repair costs, make sure to keep your gutters relatively clear through the fall. And, once the trees around your home are bare, do a thorough cleaning. You can also get out ahead of the fall season and have gutter screens or guards installed to prevent the collection of debris in the first place.

Clear Leaves and Pine Needles

It’s important to remove leaves, pine needles, and other debris from the your roof as well as your gutters. Even small bits of debris will hold moisture and possibly rot or mold, which will break down your roofing material.

If you’re confident and experienced in walking on your roof, get up there and broom or blow off the debris that has collected on your roof, paying special attention to the valleys, which are most vulnerable to water damage. Make sure they are free and clear of debris so as to allow water to flow. If you are not confident walking on your roof, contact us and we will send a technician to do this for you.

Look for Damage

With a clean roof, scan the surface for missing shingles or ones that have cracked curled or frayed edges.
Also check for damaged flashing around vent stacks, chimneys, and skylights. These areas are the usual suspects when you have a leak. Repairing flashing yourself may not always provide the results you expect, so give us a call and we’ll make sure everything is sealed properly before the rain hits. This is critical for extending the life of your roof.

Attic Insulation and Ventilation

Without adequate airflow in your attic, you could be looking at higher-that-necessary energy bills and roof leaks emerging in a snowstorm. During the day, sunlight hits your roof and heats up the air in your attic. Without vents located at the soffits, ridges, and/or gables of your roof, the hot air condensates, causing moisture damage and possible mold or rot in your roof’s supports.

This heat can also cause ice dams in higher elevations, inviting leaks when snow accumulates on your roof. Ice dams can be an issue in Central Oregon with our cold nights and sunny winter days. If your roof accumulates snow we can remove it. Contact us for information regarding roof snow removal.
